Marie Roland Alain Wong Yen Cheong: Environmental protection measures in land, air and water in Mauritius

Source: B&R Working Committee

The Mauritian government is very concerned about environmental protection and has made a lot of efforts under the legislative framework to ensure our environmental protection in terms of strategy and law.

We have provided a lot of funds and assistance for the reprocessing of solar energy and water resources. Mauritius has now banned the use of disposable plastic bags, and has provided a lot of legal support for the sustainable development of the country. We have also made many achievements in the protection of marine resources and made a series of protection in terms of chemicals and environmentally sensitive substances. In the face of these challenges, we have issued many strategies and policies aimed at improving environmental governance, which are based on the most serious environmental challenges we face, such as oil and energy, and constantly transforming traditional energy into efficient and clean energy. Climate change has now become the biggest challenge we are facing. According to the 2018 World Nature report, most countries have been exposed to natural disasters. Mauritius is particularly at risk because of our limited resources. Small island countries like us have been making great efforts to reduce the impact of climate change. We devote 2.8% of our GDP income to environmental protection every year. In addition, our government has established a US $500million coastal protection fund and a solid waste treatment fund. However, based on all our measures, we have invested US $5.5 billion in various fields including transportation, energy and waste disposal. We have also been investing in water treatment and water resource infrastructure.
