Road technology of modified and solidified red mud


Technical principle

In this technology, alkali resistant mineralizing bacteria are added into red mud to adsorb on the surface of red mud particles, and free ions are consolidated into carbonate, hydroxide or other sedimentary minerals by using specific enzymes generated in its metabolism. With the progress of the reaction, it forms and grows on the surface of microbial cells, adsorbs on the surface of red mud particles to form a package, and forms a bridge between red mud particles, thus forming cementation and pore filling for red mud, significantly improving its mechanical properties and water stability; It can also transform various ions in red mud from the extractable state with active chemical properties into the carbonate bound state or organic bound state with stable properties and insoluble in water. 


Scope of application

It is applicable to the treatment and utilization of red mud, the solid waste of alumina industry. The red mud after treatment is used as engineering materials for the construction of highways, municipal roads, ports and wharves, factories and mines, freight yards and other projects.


Process flow and description

There are two kinds of construction processes:

Centralized mixing method in the mixing plant: red mud and bio based modified and solidified materials are transported to the mixing plant, and all materials are evenly mixed by the mixer after measurement, and then transported to the construction site after being adjusted to the optimal moisture content, and are paved and mechanically compacted by scraper, paver, roller and other equipment.

Mixing method at the construction site: transport the red mud to the site, pave it with a scraper, evenly spread the bio based modified solidified materials to the red mud surface with a spreader according to the dosage, mix it evenly with a road mixer, and compact it mechanically with a roller.
After mechanical compaction, the red mud is cured by sprinkling water to react, solidify and stabilize the red mud and become the filling material

Promotion prospects

In China, the accumulated stockpile of red mud exceeds 1.5 billion tons, and the annual discharge of red mud exceeds 120 million tons. The stockpiling of red mud takes up land, wastes resources, and easily causes environmental pollution and potential safety hazards. The reduction, recycling and harmless comprehensive utilization of red mud has become a common problem faced by the government and alumina enterprises.
In the next 5-10 years, the national highway, national and provincial trunk lines, municipal roads, ports and wharves, industrial and mining enterprises and other projects within the reasonable transportation distance of the red mud yard will require more than 50 million tons of engineering fill each year, which can realize the large-scale utilization and consumption of 45 million tons of red mud per year, and directly bring economic benefits of 3 billion yuan.
