Technology Name

Aqueous Fingerprint Technique for Identification of Pollution Discharge Source (AFTIPDS)

Technical principle

A three-dimensional fluorescence spectrum of water sample can be obtained by projecting the fluorescence intensity of the water sample in a contour manner on a plane with the emission wavelength as horizontal coordinates and the excitation wavelength as the vertical coordinates (Figure 1-1).

Figure1-1 The principle of fluorescence production and three-dimensional fluorescence spectrum

Inspired by a criminal investigation using fingerprints to quickly identify suspects, AFTIPDS was invented based on the phenomenon that three-dimensional fluorescence spectrum of water samples has the characteristics of one-to-one correspondence with the pollution source and could be regarded as aqueous fingerprint. There are significant differences between the aqueous fingerprints of wastewater and the unpolluted water. And there are also obvious differences between the aqueous fingerprints of wastewater from different industries. Even the aqueous fingerprints of different enterprises in the same industry are also different. Thus, the discharge source of water pollution can be identified via the aqueous fingerprints’ comparison (Figure 1-2).

Scope of application

AFTIPDS can be applied in various fields such as, precise supervision of water pollution source in industrial parks; basin/urban water safety guarantee; drinking water source protection; response to accidental water pollution; disputation arbitration of cross-boundary water pollution and other scenarios. For example, AFTIPDS provides early warning and safeguard measures to protect drinking water safety, helps identify the main pollution sources in the polluted river sections and clarify the responsibility subject for water pollution, and improves the level of precise supervision of water pollution in industrial parks. AFTIPDS can give the key guidance information for the implementation of water pollution control policies and measures.

Process flow and description

When applied in water environment supervision, AFTIPDS generally has the following steps: (1) aqueous fingerprint database of key pollution sources is established as the basic information; (2) after online or offline monitoring, the aqueous fingerprint of the abnormal sample is uploaded for comparison with the database to identify the pollution discharge source by giving directly the suspicious industry or enterprise; (3) the results for identification of water pollution source are uploaded to the supervision platform in time, which can help staff improve management and supervision efficiency of water environment; (4) at the same time, the results of pollution source identification will also be given to the on-site person who can respond in time.

Promotion prospects

The application of AFTIPDS has covered important river basins in China. The industrialized company of this technology (G-seeker) cooperates with other leading companies who have rich market sources in water conservancy and environmental protection field and creates a fast development channel for this technology. At the same time, this technology can help form efficient supervision mode “detection of pollution in time - accurate investigation of pollution sources - rapid law enforcement”, which can improve the efficiency of environmental supervision by more than 20 times.

The sales network has been built home and abroad along the “Belt and Road Routes”.

The industrial chain of “components and parts - instrument manufacturing – technology related service” is promoted and more jobs are created. In recent years, industrial Ecology of AFTIPDS has been gradually formed.
