Antonios Toumazis: the current environmental protection situation in Cyprus and the need for international cooperation to address climate change

Source: B&R Working Committee

The Republic of Cyprus now actively supports the "the Belt and Road" initiative and has signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation with the government of the People's Republic of China to strengthen cooperation in many areas. In my sharing, I will pay attention to the current situation of environmental protection in Cyprus and the need for all countries to cooperate closely to cope with climate change.

As a member state of the European Union, the Republic of Cyprus is closely bound with many policies on climate change at the EU level, and has always strictly implemented the EU's climate change goals. You may also know that the EU is a very ambitious leader in addressing climate change. We are also very pleased that the Chinese government and Chinese leaders are determined to tackle climate change, and have achieved many magnificent goals.

In order to cope with climate change, Cyprus, the UNFCCC, the Kyoto Protocol and so on have worked together to safeguard our commitments and expectations to the international community and the European Commission on climate change. Cyprus has responded to climate change within the framework of the European Union by signing multi-party agreements, the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris agreement. EU member states have submitted their letters of intent to carry out some actions at the national level. Through the goal of reducing 40% of domestic greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, we work together to provide appropriate solutions to adapt to the climate reduction targets of various countries. As a small country, we realize that we can contribute to reducing the impact of climate change at the national level. We have been seeking regional cooperation to coordinate our policy actions, develop common projects to achieve these goals with joint efforts.
