Hélder Carvalho Joana:International cooperation has greatly promoted Portugals progress in energy and environmental protection

Source: B&R Working Committee

The purpose of the Paris Agreement is to enable us to cope with the most serious climate change challenge at present, join hands and create a greener future for our future generations. In this regard, I would like to make three points about Portugal. As many speakers have mentioned before, President Xi Jinping has proposed that China will become a carbon neutral country by 2060, which is a very important step, in particular, for such a large country to set such an ambitious goal. At the same time, we know that this is the highly praised goal put forward by the President of China. Hereby, congratulations on China's successful application for next year's UN biodiversity conference. As the video just said, biodiversity and climate change is closely connected, which shows us that China and Europe are facing the same problems. As the Slovak Ambassador said, Europe is now undergoing the transformation to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, we can cooperate more closely in this regard.

Portugal's climate is determined by its geography and now, we are facing the environmental challenge of climate change. We share the same perspective as China, that is, we all know that we are responsible for our future. We have issued a series of government documents and policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect forests. At the same time, we have doubled our efforts on clean energy and renewable energy to avoid extreme climate and protect our water resources. We will achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, which is the only way for us when facing such a great environmental and climate challenge.
