2020 "the Belt and Road" high level round table conference on economic and environmental cooperation was held in Nanjing

On October 28, 2020, "the Belt and Road" high level round table conference on economic and environmental cooperation with the theme of "actively developing multilateral relations and promoting green BRI cooperation", hosted by the All-China Federation and organized by the Water Environment Governance Professional Committee and the World Environmental Science and Technology Development Institute, was grandly held in Nanjing.

At the round table dialogue session of the conference, the participants briefly described their views and suggestions on the current situation of China's environmental policies and environmental industries, the current situation of environmental development in countries along the BRI, national investment and policies in the environmental field, the introduction of overseas business development of enterprises and the needs of "going global", and the development of green supply chains along the BRI.

In the preparatory stage of the conference, the 6th president of Mauritius, Amira urifakim, the 56th Prime Minister of Italy, Matteo Renzi, and the envoys of many countries to China have highly praised and congratulated.

In his speech, President Sun Xiaohua pointed out that beauty has been our human dream since ancient times, and building a green and beautiful home is now the common dream of mankind. During the exchange, the relevant countries generally recognized that they have encountered some new situations and problems, that is, the rise of unilateralism and the proliferation of anti-globalization thoughts. They unanimously called for adherence to multilateralism, extensive and in-depth cooperation, strengthening communication and coordination, including increasing mutual trust. Therefore, this forum promotes the development of multilateral relations and is of great significance to promoting the international cooperation of the green "the Belt and Road".

Liu Renxiang, Deputy Director, said: the rise and down of ecology is in line with civilization. Holding this event provides us with a good learning and exchange platform. We will carefully listen to the insights of experts, respect and protect nature, and continue to promote the construction of ecological civilization. We will put the building of ecological civilization in the political, cultural and social development, and promote the high-quality economic and social development of Lishui.

Sergei Kameshev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to China

Ambassador Sergei Kameshev mentioned in the panel discussion that Ukraine and China will sign a historic document, which is the cooperation plan between Ukraine and the people's Republic of China within the framework of common economic development, " the Belt and Road" and the cooperation framework of the 21st century Maritime Silk Road, which will pave the way for closer and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries in many different fields. In addition, cooperation in the field of environmental protection and green development will be one of the cornerstones of the program. According to this plan, the two sides will, within the framework of the international green development alliance under the "the Belt and Road" initiative, focus on adhering to the concept of ecological culture, strengthening environmental protection and coping with climate change. All these common steps will eventually lead to the further development of the green " Belt and Road" and the community with shared future for mankind.

Duchamp Bela, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Slovak Republic to China

Ambassador Duchamp Beira mentioned in the group discussion that the basic vision of 2030 is to balance quality and quantity, and not at the expense of environmental quality in the process of sustainable economic cycle. We hope that we can enhance our awareness of innovation in the field of environmental protection, circular economy and other environmental protection policies.

Marie Roland Alain Wong Yen Cheong, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Mauritius to China

Ambassador Marie Roland Alain Wong Yen Cheong said: environment is a key to sustainable development. Mauritius is a small island country, so environmental protection is very important for our government. In my life, I have witnessed the disastrous consequences of environmental protection and unsustainable development, especially the impact on species and sea level. I have also seen a lot of fish in the sea die in large areas because of environmental problems. I hope future generations can see the blue sea. Mauritius has carried out many stages of protection and has made many efforts under the legislative framework to ensure our environmental protection in terms of strategy and law.

Ambassador Porozanov said: President Xi Jinping has constantly stressed the investment in environmental protection. We feel excited to hear such news every time. Environment should be one of our most valuable resources, but if we do not protect it well, such a resource will not be used by us in the end. Sustainable protection, sustainable use and sustainable development, these three links cannot be ignored. So why do we talk about circular economy and harmonious economic development? That is, we should not blindly pursue economic performance at the expense of the environment. We should also see ourselves as an environmental entrepreneur and environmental citizen, not only a tax citizen, but also an environmental citizen. 

Antonis Tumazis, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cyprus to China

Antonis Tumazis said that the Republic of Cyprus now actively supports the "the Belt and Road" initiative and has signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation with the government of the People's Republic of China to strengthen cooperation in many aspects. As a member state of the European Union, the Republic of Cyprus is closely bound with EU on the level climate change policies, and has always strictly implemented the EU's climate change goals. The EU is a very ambitious leader in addressing climate change. We are also very pleased that the Chinese government and Chinese leaders are determined to tackle climate change, and achieved many magnificent goals.

Yang Guohua, Chief Engineer of Jiangxi Provincial Department of Ecological Environment

Yang Guohua said: Guided by Xi Jinping’s thought on ecological conservation, the CPC Jiangxi Provincial Committee and the Jiangxi Provincial People’s Government have thoroughly implemented the important instructions of the General Secretary Xi Jinping on the work in Jiangxi, kept in mind that green ecology is the greatest wealth, the biggest advantage and the largest brand of Jiangxi. We have deeply practiced the "two mountains theory”, actively harnessed mountains, managed rivers and revealed them. We have worked under the building of a modern governance system and capacity, focused on the construction of an ecological conservation pilot zone according to the eight major landmark campaigns and 30 special actions of pollution prevention and control. We have signed agreements with many countries within the framework of the United Nations. Our climate change goals can be achieved only if we work together to cope with them. The “Belt and Road" is one of the necessary platforms for us to achieve this goal.

Minister Sergio Narea mentioned in the group discussion that Chile believes that the " Belt and Road" is an important platform for international cooperation, which brings us very good long-term cooperation opportunities and long-term markets. During the group discussion, Minister Lu Qiu said: this year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Colombia. Last year, the president of Colombia came to China for an official visit. The bilateral relations have reached a new stage. We have signed 12 agreements and found a new direction.

Hélder Carvalho Joana, Counsellor of the Portuguese Republic in China

Counsellor Hélder Carvalho Joana said: President Xi Jinping has proposed that China will become a carbon neutral country by 2060, which is a very important step. In particular, it is very important for such a large country to set such a grand goal. At the same time, we know that this is the highly praised goal put forward by the Chinese president. We also hope that Portugal will have more cooperation with China in water resources treatment and water resources protection. I believe this is our common vision and goal.
